The emergency lighting system is primarily used to illuminate important locations and paths leading to emergency exits during building evacuations or failures of the main lighting system. Emergency lighting systems operate on batteries and are required for certain buildings. Just like emergency exit signs, emergency lighting systems must be inspected annually by a certified technician. Batteries have a lifespan of approximately 5 years and bulbs must be replaced when they burn out.
