Notifier Fire Alarm System

Sale / Installation / Maintenance / Inspection / Monitoring Center

The main function of a fire alarm system is to detect the start of a fire as early as possible and notify the occupants.  However, a fire alarm system alone cannot ensure the safe occupancy of a building.  For it to be fully effective, a fire alarm system must be used in conjunction with a fire safety plan and emergency measures.

A fire alarm system may consist of the following components: control panel, manual triggers, fire detectors (smoke detectors and heat detectors), audible alarms, visual alarms, electrical monitoring systems to supervise pressure, flow, and valves in the case of buildings protected by sprinklers, annunciators to indicate the origin of the alarm, emergency telephones, and other devices for communication between the control panel and different parts of a building.

Types of Systems

There are two types of fire alarm systems: single signal and double signal. A single signal system will immediately sound the alarm throughout the building to alert all occupants that a fire has occurred. In the case of a double signal system, an alert signal intended for a few people (usually employees) is given to search for the source of the alert and activate the alarm signal if there is a fire. This type of system is generally used where planned evacuation is necessary and where a general alarm would risk alarming occupants (for example, in a healthcare facility).

Verification

Every fire alarm system must be verified annually in accordance with the CAN/ULC-S536 standard "Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems". This verification aims to ensure that the system and all its components are still functional. It includes validating the proper operation of the control panel, manual triggers, fire detectors (smoke and heat), and any other component directly related to the fire alarm system.

In the event that the inspection reveals a defect or non-compliance, a report is produced, and the correction must be made promptly.
